My Holidays Stress Management Protocol

Holiday Stress Management v2

Mt Brunswick – Nov 2013

The Holidays can be a stressful time of year. I wanted to share what I now do to keep the stress down and actually enjoy this time of year.

I used to experience a high level of stress during the Holidays for a number of reasons, but mostly it was all the extra socializing required which isn’t a natural thing for me. But over the past couple of years, I’ve applied a couple simple strategies so that I now look forward to the Holidays and really just enjoy them, rather than getting all stressed.

Here are the 3 main Strategies I’ve been applying with good results. Feel free to edit, add or discard as you see fit, but if these seem helpful, I’d love it if you clicked one of the share buttons to spread these ideas to your friends!

#1 Make Wellness a Top Priority

When is it the most important to make wellness a priority? When you’re the most stressed! But that’s also the hardest time to do it, isn’t it? This time of year can be a stressful one as you know, but that doesn’t mean we give in a let it consume us. A bit of extra effort to make that smoothie or go for that run pays off big time. Watch this video for more details.

#2 Commit to an Alcohol Policy

While at a conference in California in September, I came across an idea to create personal policies (they’re way less harsh than personal ‘rules’). So since I wanted to drink less alcohol, I created a personal policy to drink no more than 4 drinks per week. It’s actually been quite easy to follow and I feel better because of it. People generally drink more alcohol during the holidays, and this can add to our stress, make us tired and inhibit our brain function – not to mention make us feel depressed and stressed. Try to find a number of drinks per week that feels right for you and stick to it!

#3 Schedule Wellness Retreats

This is an idea I’ve been practicing for around 3 years now, and it never fails to work. A ‘Wellness Retreat’ does not have to mean a week in Bali (although if you can make that happen, by all means go for it). A Wellness Retreat can be an evening where you unplug from all the tech and just hang out, play a board game, cook a meal or read a book. It could mean a day out in nature with friends or a weekend camping or at a remote cabin. The idea is to rest your body and mind and recharge for the next push. This can be super high end expensive or something that doesn’t cost you a penny. No excuses, schedule a Wellness Retreat right now!
